Today's post is day five of my ten day series, Ten Ways to Tone Up in Ten Days. The focus is to strengthen our arms and get our postpartum abs back in shape. If you missed the first four posts, visit Day 1:Rebounding, Day 2: Cran-Water, Day 3:Weight Training and Day 4: No Sugar. Today I will be discussing the benefits of Psyllium Husks.
This video by Dr. Mercola is excellent in explaining why Psyllium husks are beneficial to our health. The video is advertising a specific brand of psyllium husks at the end. This is not an affiliate link and I currently do not use the product he is advertising, I purchase my husks from a local grocer.
Psyllium Husks Support Gut Health
Psyllium husks are derived from the seeds of the Plantago ovate.
71 grams of soluble fiber are provided in only 100 grams of psyllium husks. Many are shying away from the fiber found in wheat products and psyllium husks are a gluten free option that increases our daily fiber intake and improves gut health.
Psyllium Husks Lower Cholesterol
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports psyllium to be effective in lowering total as well as LDL cholesterol levels, which aids those with high cholesterol and those at increased risk for developing hypercholesterolemia, such as people with type 2 diabetes. An added benefit is that pysllium decreases risk of coronary heart disease according to the FDA.
Psyllium Husks are an Anticarcinogenic
Psyllium husks can help prevent colon cancer. Psyllium is considered a prebiotic which feeds the good bacteria in your colon and decreases the PH in your colon thereby lowering your risk of colon cancer.
Psylluim husks can be used as an egg substitute in baking. Replace the egg with 1 TBSP Psyllium Husks and 2 TBSP water.
I typically take 1 tbsp. in 8 oz. of almond milk followed by 8 oz, warm water. It is important that you drink plenty of water when consuming pysllium as the husks swell and would pose a choking hazard if not adequately hydrated.
